On November 21st, 2021–with a noose tied around my neck, attached to a small punctured can of black paint, I walked the entirety of Commonwealth Avenue, Boston MA. Nick Liden followed me with a Quasar VHS Palmcorder, recording footage onto a standard 8mm tape cassette. Presented here is the entirety of his documentation. This video is inspired by the video performance piece, Re-enactment, by Francis Alys.
The average rental price of a property on Commonwealth Ave is 3,846$ per month, higher than 85.8% of Boston neighborhoods.
On December 2nd in Emerson College’s studio 7, after a showing of the previous video, I stepped out of a pool of black water, with a noose tied to each of my hands. I then performed one of Vsevolod Meyerhold’s biomechanical etudes, “Throwing a Stone.” Below is a series of 120mm photographs taken by Nick Liden on a Hasselblad 500c. They are accompanied by a snippet of audio used in the performance, a hydrophone recording by Jack Liden.
This work was originally exhibited and performed at Emerson College. The video portion of this work, was exhibited in its entirety once more at my group show, Cradle to Grave. A shortened version of the piece is available to watch at vimeo.com/cokinos
